Aogami — or “Blue Paper Steel” — is one of Japan’s most revered knife steels, known for its sharpness, edge retention, and heritage. But what makes it different from the purer White Steel (Shirogami)? The answer lies in two key alloying elements: tungsten (W) and chromium (Cr).
Aogami starts with the same pure carbon steel as Shirogami (White Steel), made by Hitachi Metals. This base has very low impurities — ideal for edge sharpness — but lacks additional elements for strength or wear resistance.
Tungsten (W) improves wear resistance by forming hard carbides, making the edge last longer even under heavy use. It also contributes to grain refinement, meaning a finer, more stable microstructure at the cutting edge.
Chromium (Cr) adds a mild corrosion resistance boost — not enough to make the steel “stainless,” but enough to help prevent immediate rusting in humid or wet conditions. It also supports hardenability during quenching.
